The Renaissance and Moliere Persuasive Essay Example For Students

The Renaissance and Moliere Persuasive Essay The French word renaissance is equivalent to rebirth in English. The time period named for this term was indeed a rebirth of the creativity and human spirit lost with the classical age. Most importantly, the Renaissance was a revival of an interest to learn. In many ways, it is the opposite of the preceding Middle Ages. Their world revolved around the Roman Catholic Church; belief in god dictated every aspect of life. On the contrary, the Renaissance was secular and emphasized the predominance of individuality and human values, known as humanism. We will write a custom essay on The Renaissance and Moliere Persuasive specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now However rigid or dark the Middle Ages may seem, they were essential for setting the stage for the Renaissance. In 1095, Pope Urban II launched what he called a holy war. This war, issued to regain control of the Holy Land from the Muslims, occurred from 1095 to 1099 and became known as the First Crusade. The Second Crusade began in 1144 with hopes of recapturing the City of Odessa, and it ended in 1149 without having accomplished what it was intended for. The third and final crusade (1189-1192) was organized to take Jerusalem back from the Muslim leader, Slain, also failing to accomplish its original goal. However, there is a reason the Crusades are recognized as history most successful failure The impacts of these religious wars were as influential as it gets. Women had opportunities to manage affairs with the men away at war. The ships that transported crusaders were used by merchants to bring back goods such as tea, coffee, sugar, spices, crops, and silk. Europeans saw these as exotic, which stimulated an interest in trade, especially between Europe and Southwest Asia. This increased trade was one of the most prominent attributes of the High Middle Ages. It was also vital for paving the way for the Renaissance. With expanding trade came prosperity for Europe, specifically Italy, along with new trading cities. The fast growth of such business is labeled as the Commercial Revolution. The revolution enabled European towns to grow, and guilds (worker unions) to develop. When serfs recognized opportunity in trade, they abandoned their lords, and a middle class developed. Together, these factors broke down Feudalism The surge of trade and commerce in the High Middle Ages led to a widespread increase in knowledge. Literature became more accessible, and was written in vernacular dative language, as opposed to Latin. This made it so that a wider variety of people could become literate. Before, only the wealthy could read and write. Universities were established, and the curriculum covered arithmetic, grammar, music, and drama. The High Middle Ages was the peak of the Medieval Era. However, the late Middle Ages seemed to be comprised of disaster and turmoil. Pope Boniface VIII and King Phillip IV of France collided, leading to the Great Schism. By the time this split in the church ceased with the election of Martin V in 1417, the papacy had already been greatly weakened. The bubonic plague hit Europe hard, leading to the death of 25 million of its people. The prayers of the Church failed to stop the plague, which further lowered its prestige. The Black Death ripped apart the fabric of society. However grim the Plague was, it certainly lent itself to the development of the Renaissance. The late Middle Ages were a terrifying time to be alive, and the survivors wanted to celebrate human spirit and individuality. This newfound outlook Renaissance. The people of Italy originally hoped to reawaken the culture of Classical Rome and Greece, however in the process they discovered new styles of art and iterate, along with new values such as humanism. .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f , .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f .postImageUrl , .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f , .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f:hover , .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f:visited , .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f:active { border:0!important; } .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f:active , .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8b96682899bb4fa2924ecdf6b69b715f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: English Renaissance TheatreThis time period originated in Italy due to its prosperous cities and merchant class, but soon the rest of Europe was under its influence. Merchants saw the best opportunities lay in the field of the arts, and they soon flourished. The arts also became less secular, drama in particular. Religious plays saw their demise when interludes led to the rebirth of theater. Moldier dean Baptists Opaquely) was a French playwright, actor, and director. Born on January 15 1622, he dedicated himself entirely to the theater until his tragic death in 673. He composed 12 of the most lasting comedies in history, and rose to fame with the publication of his first play, The Precious Maidens Ridiculed (1659). He was known as the most popular comic playwright of his time. His comedy was secular, and the clergy even believed that some of his plays were intended as attacks at the church. They went so far as to ban one of his works. The last of his pieces was The Imaginary Invalid (1673), which he wrote while ill from a lung condition. After the fourth performance of this play, Moldier collapsed on stage, coughing up blood, while laying the lead role, Organ, and died later that day. As in much of Molders work, The Imaginary Invalid (El Malady imaginary) showcases a good amount of Comedic delegate themes and techniques, such as stock characters the three most pronounced of these figures were the servant, master, and inamorata (lovers). The play is a satire of the medical field, as the lead, Organ, is a classic hypochondriac. His daughter Angelic is an Inamorata (a lover), her partner being the man she wishes to marry. Organ has plans for her to marry a doctor, seeing as hes ill and a doctor in the family would benefit himself. Their maid Continent is the equivalent of a Comedic servant. The Imaginary Invalid showcases certain ideals of the Renaissance, such as the importance of each individual, and that the greatest part of being human is the humans free will to choose. Angelic comes to her father expecting to have his blessing in her marrying the man of her dreams. Organ seems to be more than willing to consent, even satisfied with what he has heard of the man, until they gather that they are not talking about the same person. Before the Renaissance, there was no compromise the only word that mattered was the fathers. The plays controversial comedy also reflected values of the Renaissance. It was a source of entertainment produced for peoples enjoyment regardless of the Churchs disapproval. While contrasting to the celebrated Renaissance, the Middle Ages were essential for setting the stage for the remarkable era. The Renaissance remains an impressive time period, considering the immense growth of human knowledge and achievements. The arts held a position of utmost importance, and they allowed people to express themselves in many ways. This feeds directly into the number one new value of the time: humanism.

The Meanings of Sarah Palins Childrens Unusual Names

The Meanings of Sarah Palin's Children's Unusual Names Many questions have been raised about the unusual names of Sarah Palins children . They werent randomly chosen. In fact, the former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate and her husband, Todd Palin, selected names that reflect the familys personal history and shared passions. Track Palin Track, the familys first-born son, was given that name because of the familys longstanding interest in sports. Sarahs parents were coaches, Todd was a high school athlete, and Sarah is an avid runner. Their first child was born during the track season. Track made news in January 2016 when he was charged in a domestic violence case in which his girlfriend said he punched her and threatened suicide. Palin was charged with three misdemeanors and pleaded guilty on a weapons charge. The other charges were dismissed. Sarah said her son’s arrest stemmed from post-traumatic stress disorder after a military deployment in Iraq. In December 2017 Track was charged with felony burglary, fourth degree assault against his father, and criminal mischief for causing property damage  at his parents home. According to court documents, the dispute was over a truck that Track wanted to borrow; his father declined because Track allegedly had been drinking and taking pain medicine. He was ordered to spend a year in custody in October 2018 after a third alleged assault when a judge ruled the allegation disqualified him from a therapeutic veterans program following a previous assault case. Bristol Palin The couples oldest daughter is named after Bristol Bay, an area where Todd grew up. Bristol Bay is also the site of the familys commercial fishing interests. Willow and Piper Palin The Palins havent identified the significance of their other two daughters names, but the meaning is likely rooted in aspects of the regions culture and way of life. Willow is the name of a small Alaskan community near the family home in Wasilla. Piper may have come from the name of the popular bush plane the Piper Cub, which is commonly used in Alaska. In a People magazine interview, Todd was quoted as saying, Theres just not too many Pipers out there, and its a cool name. Trig Paxson Van Palin Trig Paxson Van Palin is the couples youngest child. According to governors spokeswoman Sharon Leighow in a statement shortly after his birth, Trig is Norse and means true and brave victory. Paxson is a region in Alaska the couple favors, while Van is a nod to the rock group Van Halen. Before Trigs birth, his mother had joked about naming her son Van Palin, a play on the bands name. Trigs birth was a source of controversy and blogosphere rumors. Palin, according to her book Going Rogue, didnt tell anyone about her pregnancy with their fifth child except her husband. There were rumors that Bristol, not Sarah, was Trigs mother, but the allegations were largely disproved. Sources: Shapiro, Rich. Whats in the Palins childrens names? Cajun History, Language, Music, Cuisine, and Culture

Cajun History, Language, Music, Cuisine, and Culture Cajuns are a group of people largely residing in southern Louisiana, a region rich with the history of several cultures. Descended from the Acadians, French settlers from Atlantic Canada, today they celebrate a diverse and vibrant culture unlike any other. Cajun History In 1754, France went to war with Great Britain in North America over lucrative fishing and fur-trapping efforts, a conflict known as the Seven Years War. This conflict ended in defeat for the French with the Treaty of Paris in 1763. France was forced to give up their rights to their colonies in North America as a term of that treaty. During the war the Acadians were exiled from the land theyd occupied for over a century, a process known as the Great Disturbance. The exiled Acadians resettled in many locations including the British North American colonies, France, England, the Caribbean and for some, a Spanish colony known as Louisiana. Settlement of Cajun Country in Louisiana The new settlers began cultivating the land for agriculture and fished the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding bayous. They navigated the Mississippi River. People from other cultures including the Spanish, Canary Islanders, Native Americans, descendants of African slaves and French Creoles from the Caribbean settled in Louisiana as well during this same time period. People from these different cultures interacted with each other over the years and formed the modern-day Cajun culture. The word â€Å"Cajun† itself is a an evolution of the word â€Å"Acadian,† in the French-based creole language that became widely spoken among the settlers in this area. France acquired Louisiana from Spain in 1800, only to sell the area to the United States of America three years later in the Louisiana Purchase. The area settled by the Acadians and other cultures became known as the Territory of Orleans. American settlers poured into the Territory soon after, eager to make money. The Cajuns sold the fertile land along the Mississippi River and pushed westward, to modern south-central Louisiana, where they could settle the land for no cost. There, they cleared land for pasture grazing and began growing crops such as cotton and rice. This area is known as Acadiana due to the influence from Cajun culture. Cajun Culture and Language As a result Cajun French became spoken less and nearly died out altogether during the mid-20th century. Organizations such as the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana devoted their efforts to provide means for Louisianans of all cultures to learn French. In 2000, the Council reported 198,784 Francophones in Louisiana, many of whom speak Cajun French. Many speakers statewide speak English as their primary language but use French at home. Cajun Cuisine Cajun Music With increased exposure to other cultures through Internet-based media Cajun culture continues to remain popular and, without a doubt, will continue to thrive.

Business Excellence Following The Example of Dell Inc Essay

Business Excellence Following The Example of Dell Inc - Essay Example After successfully doing business in the global markets for almost a decade, Dell began facing challenges in terms of competition, rapidly losing its market share and witnessing a reduction in its customer bases (Paul & et. al., 2007). Furthermore, the company was losing its market share in all the segments, namely, desktops, servers and notebooks during the same year to its major competitors. Notably, the major factors that led to the declining market share of Dell from all segments can be identified as the company’s emphasis on its traditional business model lacking in terms of innovation and transformation. Due to the company’s resistance to change in the global competitive market, other players in this industry such as HP and Lenovo emerged as the new leaders. They focussed on the emerging markets and segments such as Laptops, whereas Dell with a market share of 4.2% ranked eighth among other manufacturers (Paul & et. al., 2007). In today’s modern era, the processor rather the conception of change is attributed to the only continuous and inevitable phenomenon of the business world. Due to the incessant changes occurring in the external business environment, businesses are becoming increasingly swayed to implement strategic changes in their business processes. It is in this context that due to the ongoing changes in the global business environment, business entities are forced to alter their operational vision, goals and methodologies too often causing the risk of unplanned and chaotic changes in the working process which in turn are quite likely to give rise to perplexity within the human resources and thus lead towards a greater disruption in the overall operational functions of the organisation.

Analyse case study financially Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Analyse case study financially - Essay Example However he purchased the stock from his partner and became the sole owner. In 1994, when Harvey retired, it was agreed that his wife, Barbara will own the business and after her, it would go to Bruce. However, Bruce will be running the business and getting its proceeds and in turn will look after Barbara’s medical expenses, pay for mortgage ($23,500) and pay her $500 every month. Due to the recent issues raised by Barbara that Bruce had not been paying her properly, Bruce has come up with a contract. The contract indicates that he will make a down payment of $50,000 and then $500 thereafter for the remainder of Barbara’s life. Barbara and family are confused, whether this was a fair offer or not. In order to identify a fair offer, it is essential to understand the reasons behind Bruce pushing this contract to be signed at the earliest. It is clear that the return on total assets has doubled in one year, indicating that the assets are effectively generating profits for the bar. The return on equity has also doubled, indicating that the payoff on equity is higher (Drury, 2005). This can be main reason behind Bruce wanting to own all of the Crowne Inn, as he will be the sole owner of the company and can claim the entire profits. It is evident from the above ratios that the Crowne Inn has actively reduced the debt level over the past few years and the debts contribute to lesser than 50% of the assets. The total equity in the company has also risen in the last three years. Based on these ratios, the total debt can be cleared within a period of another 3 years and the whole company will be owned by the equity shareholders. Hence Bruce is very particular about buying the whole company, as he and Sharon only will have the claim to the business’ proceeds (Pendlebury and Groves, 2003). Barbara gives importance to her relationship with her son; however she is also particular about the oral agreement that Bruce has to take care of her. It is

Teachers Day Essay Example for Free

Teachers Day Essay Madam Aishath Adam, Senior Assistant Principal, Supervisors, members of the staff, Teachers and Dear Students. Assalaam Alaikum and Good afternoon. Today, we are here to celebrate great teachers and great teaching. As a fellow teacher, I find awkward to speak about teachers or for teachers. But, first, let me convey to all the teachers, my personal greetings and best wishes on the teachers’ day. Dear Teachers: Though a fellow teacher, I want to say I am proud of you. I am proud of your dedication to the profession and for the personal sacrifices you make to teach our children. I am delighted of your devotion to train their questing minds, and for your inspiration of their hopeful hearts. I am proud that you take this responsibility seriously —that you see it as sacred trust. We celebrate teachers’ day, because we value you. I want to remind you that all the parents, students and the wider community deeply appreciate your commitment to teaching and to the children. There is no substitute for education. Firstly, because it’s the most precious gift we can give our children. Secondly, because it’s the most critical investment in our future. And thirdly, because it’s the most effective strategy which will enable us to survive and to thrive in a changing world. Dear Students: I became a teacher because of some of the happy experiences I had in school. There were teachers who touched my soul; who helped me realize my own potential. I decided to become a teacher because I want to help change someone’s life. Sometimes, it is hard. We have our own families, financial life and life problems that challenge us, like everyone else. Sometimes we are exhausted by our workload and responsibilities. This is why teachers need encouragement and support. So that in turn, we can devote ourselves to our students. Dear staff and students; On Teachers’ Day every year, we remember our teachers, we remember our children’s teachers. We recognize these very dedicated people. People who give of themselves and take a personal interest in their students. Teachers who have touched our  lives, moulded us into what we are today, and are helping to shape tomorrow’s people, tomorrow’s students. Just as a country is as good as its people, so its citizens are only as good as their teachers. Therefore a great deal depends on you, teachers, and I salute you, all of you, those here today, and those absent, for your passion, dedication, commitment and contributions. I wish to all the teachers a successful career in teaching — a career in which you find happiness, health, friendship and love. Happy Teachers’ Day and thank you.

British Mercantilism Essay -- essays research papers

Economic ideas and systems come and go. Many systems have failed and many have succeeded. The British system of mercantilism was actually quite a good system for England. They raked in profits from their colonies. The only problem was that they did not give enough economic freedom to their colonies. At almost every turn, the British tried to restrict what their colonies could do and whom they could trade with. In hindsight, I believe that the British may have been a bit more lenient on their restrictions because the constant prohibitions eventually lead to revolution†¦ England did not directly control its colonies. Instead, they let joint-stock companies control and provide funds and foodstuffs for the colonies. Modern day corporations find their roots in these Joint-stock companies. The joint-stock companies were comprised of a group of entrepreneurs who provided the funds for all the voyages and supplies. The people funding the company usually controlled the colony as well.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Dominion of New England was set up by English officials to unite the colonies into one defense against the Native   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Americans. It was run by a man named Andros, who began to levy taxes on all the colonists without first getting input from the various assemblies from the colonies. However, his boots gave him away.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The colonists were growing more and more displeased by the economic system the British were forcing on them, and then the Molasses Act came. This Act placed high tariffs on sugar, molasses and rum imported into New England in a effort to prevent colonial trade with the French West Indies sugar islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. British sugar merchants on the islands of Barbados, Antigua and Jamaica had complained to Parliament. The law was enacted to restrict non-British trade and to further enforce the concept that trade was to be done only on British owned ships. Ink and Paper Communication Essay

People say that the art of letter writing is dead. But my idea of heaven is writing a letter to a dear friend in a far away town, a note to my cousin saying â€Å" thankyou † for the dinner we had this weekend, a fan letter to the writer whose story I read and admired. I love to write something, be it a short story, a poem, a serious article or just letters. It is so magical to gather the right words and put them together on the paper†¦ I write a couple of letters a day, and suffer from bouts of guilt, thinking I may perhaps be over burdening my friends and relatives with my written material. Letters have been very important in my life, those that I have written and received. I have treasured the ones which are very dear to me, to read them again and again reveling in the magical spell they cast on me every time unfolding something new. It was a hobby that started from my childhood, when I wrote letters to my school friends, teachers, relatives and strangers as well. I std lX, when suddenly half the nation was consumed by the passion of acting, I too was one of them. I wrote my first fan letter to the great ‘Amitabh Bachchan’ and received from him a typed reply and his autographed photograph. His letter, the special handmade greeting card, and the letters written by my friends are the most treasured possession. Recently when I revealed my letter writing habbit to my friend, I was told, †but my dear, no one writes letters anymore! Where’s the time?† Agreed! I know people who never write letters for whom its just a waste of time. How easy it is to reach for the telephone type a few digits and talk to person miles away from you†¦ no pondering over thoughts no addressing of envelopes and no waiting for response. No doubt, the telephone is more efficient and instant but I doubt whether it is, on the whole as effective as a letter. Letters have a certain power, your heartbeat ticks rhythmically with every comma and a full stop†¦ you can preserve a letter , read it study it, carry it around like a cherished possession. It is not momentary as a telephone call, quickly done and quickly forgotten. As I have grown over years, I have matured and hopefully become wiser. I have learned to think twice before dropping a letter written in a melancholic mood. I have regretted it because by the time the letter is received the gloominess is banished and then one is left anxiously thinking about the reaction at the other end. There were moments when shyness led me to writing letters. I would have never been able to make friends with strangers had I not been a keen writer. I cannot dream of calling up a writer, actor, painter whose work I admire, until and unless I know them personally. But without hesitation I write them letters of appreciation, and if my letter is welcomed, it is answered and if not, I’ve got nothing to lose. Its funny but I’ve maintained friendships solely through letters that may, I fear, break if there is a face to face encounter. So keep in touch. The pen and paper you use does not matter— the voice coming from the heart does. The next time when you write a letter notice for a second the magical tune that your pen plays on your paper , the rhythm of the flow of your thoughts, like the first raindrops touching the mother earth. You feel as if you are actually sitting in front of the other person reading out thoughts, collecting thoughts, coloring them with ink and presenting them paper to loved ones†¦.. anxiously waiting for the reply†¦. Letters have their special brand of magic.

Pip and Magwitch Essay

Throughout the novel Great Expectations the reader will find that Magwitch plays a significant role to the plot of story. Not only does Dickens use Magwitch to form the main foundation of the story he also uses the character to convey Dickens’s view on important themes such as crime, punishment, social status and betrayal. In this presentation I will explore the ways in which Magwitch is presented and talk about and his significance in the novel. We are first introduced to Magwitch in chapter one. The reader becomes familiar with the character Pip; we learn he is a child who is alone in the graveyard and is mourning over the death of his family. The reader knows that not only would this upset Pip, it could make him feel frightened because as a child you are dependant on your family members to keep you safe. He makes it sound as if Pip was recalling what it felt like to be a child, like when we get the impression that he could have been exaggerating about wilderness and so on before him. An image is described, such as ‘the low leaden line beyond’ and this then is revealed as what it actually is; the river. This gives the effect that not only Pip is confused and lost by his surroundings but also and therefore scared and intimidated by them. Dickens delivers Pip’s emotions cleverly because there is no direct reference to how he is feeling at first. This is very good building up to the shock of first meeting Magwitch. The writer uses direct speech for his first words, which come out suddenly, at no particular starting point and with impression that they are loud! He says ‘Hold your noise. ‘ which sounds at first so abrupt it could be almost like he is trying to save Pip, that he fears for Pip too. We then read on to see how Magwitch is presented physically. He is wet and muddy, and is described as being stung by nettles, so he obviously does not look after himself properly. He is shivering and limping, so he may be unwell as well as cold. His shoes are broken and he has no hat or proper clothes which shows he cannot afford them. He has a very informal way of speaking, and is eager to see the scrap of food he finds on Pip, so this also shows that he is poor and working class. This could be because, or the results of being a criminal. The first chapter is important; we now know exactly what Magwitch looks like and how he is presented. As mentioned in the introduction, Magwitch is significant in the plot. The fact that he appears in the very first chapter makes us assume he is a main character, even though he does not reappear until later in the book when the reader either has completely forgotten about him or thinks it is very unlikely that he will appear again with the current story line, especially as at the end of chapter three it says ‘the last I ever heard of him. ‘ When he does make his unexpected reappearance in Chapter thirty-nine, he reveals news that causes him to become the centre of almost every aspect of the story line. By the end of Chapter fifty-four and when mysteries are revealed and loose ends tied we come to realise that Magwitch is somehow connected to every character. Pip, obviously because of the money he gives that cause him to become wealthy and middle-class. His lost past with Molly and Estella, his daughter, who was adopted by Miss Haversham. Also he is connected to Joe because it was his whittles and file he used to set him free. Perhaps he is connected to Mrs Joe because he murdered her. When Magwitch dies during chapter fifty-six, it impacts the plot and the characters, especially Pip. Magwitch influences other characters, especially Pip and sometimes they influence him too. Had it not been for Magwitch the way people behaved may have been very different! We do not know much about Pip before he meets Magwitch, but afterwards we find him to be cautious, for example how nervous he was when he meets Miss Haversham. This could have been a lasting effect from his fears upon first meeting Magwitch. Pip may have been so shocked by the way that the poor lived that he becomes even more determined to become a gentleman. It gave him an insight to the lives of the very poor. In chapter three Magwitch seems to wait all night just for the food Pip has brought him. Pip may have recognised his determination and perhaps used this will when he is seeking Estella as his wife later during the book. Magwitch may have been so grateful towards Pip that it made him feel like he should try and become a better person. Both Pip and Magwitch taught each other that you should not always be judgmental. For Pip, it was that he was at first very afraid of Magwitch and thought he was going to be scary. Later on he realises that he only was behaving in a threatening way because he was hungry and desperate for food.

Killing and non-killing religions Essays

Killing and non-killing religions Essays Killing and non-killing religions Essay Killing and non-killing religions Essay Introduction: In the current times, the universe is vulnerable to terror onslaughts. Some of these terrorist act activities are ever associated with utmost spiritual organisations. Take for case, the ISIS, a panic organisation runing in Iraq and Syria ( Armstrong, 2014 ) . This panic group justifies the violent death of non-Muslims on faith. They wrongly believe that the Quran gives them authorization to kill and maim anyone who is non practising Islam. This paper seeks to explicate the construct of killing and non-killing faiths. It farther seeks to place, which of these is associated with modern twenty-four hours terrorist act. This paper takes a base that killing faiths are largely associated with modern twenty-four hours terrorist act. Killing and Non Killing Religions: Nons of such faiths include Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, etc ( Docker, 2008 ) . These are regarded as non-killing faiths, because their instructions advocator against force. Take for case in Christianity, the bible Teachs that if a individual hits you on one cheek, so give him another cheek to hit. This means that a Christian should non take any retaliatory steps, such as paying force with force ( Docker, 2008 ) . Killing faiths on the other manus advocator for the riddance of anybody who goes against its bid. An illustration includes a faith that supports the slaying or violent death of people, who do non impute to its values ( Pallmeyer, 2003 ) . Controversy exists on whether Islam is an illustration of a killing faith or non. This is because there have been different readings of the instructions of Islam. One reading is of the demand to kill anybody who does non pattern Islam. Other manus, other Islamic bookmans argue that this is non right. This is because Islam seeks to encompass other faiths ( Docker, 2008 ) . However, this is an issue of argument. In a nutshell, while most Muslims position faith and morality as a agency of accomplishing peace, few of them see violence as a agency of accomplishing it. The group position jihadists as an aberrance of Islam that offers little more than subjugation, spiritual constabulary, veiled adult females, and disclaimer of modern scientific discipline. Differences Christians ( Nonkilling Religion ) believe that God sent Christ to rectify the divergences of the Jews. Muslims on another manus trust that God sent Prophet Mohammed, his concluding prophesier, to rectify the divergences of the Christians. They believe that Christianity is non a true representation of the instructions of God ( Docker, 2008 ) . For illustration, the two depart on the usage of force to distribute their faith. For case, one of the instructions of Christianity is that he who lives by the blade, will besides decease by the blade. This is a disapprobation of force, and it is seeking to advance a peaceable co-existence amongst one another. The Quran Teachs that anyone who tries to go forth the faith should be punished. By looking at these facts, it is possible to denote that Christianity and Islam are two really different faiths, and they propagate different values and beliefs. Buddhism and Hinduism are other non-killing faiths ( Pallmeyer, 2003 ) . These faiths believe in a peaceable co-existence amongst one another. Furthermore, Buddhism believes that to accomplish ultimate peace, there is a demand of an person to invariably chew over. Hinduism believes in the being of many Gods, and goddesses. On this fact, this faith embraces other faiths, and their beliefs. This is unacceptable in Islam. Islam does non digest any other faith, and they believe that no God exists, apart from their God, who is called Allah. It is because of this fact that Islamic extremists are willing to kill, for Allah ( Pallmeyer, 2003 ) . The violent advocation of Islamic beliefs is referred to as Jihad. Jihad refers to an action aimed at exercising attempt for intents of accomplishing a coveted result. Muslims usually fight Jihad on two degrees. The first degree, is the war against Satanic accusals, poorness, and diseases ( Pallmeyer, 2003 ) . The 2nd Jihad is fought against any individual who is viewed as traveling against the rules and philosophies of Islam. Non-killing faiths do non back up any type of force, nor do they hold any violent political orientations, such as jehad. Islam stresses that anyone who does non change over to Islam, should be killed, or enslaved. The other non-killing faiths do non hold these commissariats ( Pallmeyer, 2003 ) . For them, those who do non hold with their tenets are neer slayed or killed. In this position, we can appreciate the fact that these two faiths do contrast in immense stairss. While the former propagates for killing the Rebels or doing them slaves, the latter focal points on tolerance and peace. They do these based on Koran A ; apos ; s Allah philosophies. In add-on, in instance a Muslim brother gets into the manner of slaying the non-Muslims, Islam permits that such an person is slain. They can travel into the degrees of leveling a vicinity to complete off heathen ( Pallmeyer, 2003 ) . In this sense, Islam regards these types of violent deaths as piousness, and it sees nil incorrect with it. For illustration, the word Boko Haram means that Western Education is iniquitous. This is a spiritual extremist group that is found in Northern Nigeria and it advocates for the Islamization of Nigeria. In the chase of their end, they burned schools, kidnaped 100s of kids, and left causalities totaling in 1000s. Their suspected links with the al-Qaida in the Maghreb and al-Shabaab in Somalia has made Boko Haram a existent threat in the eyes of U.S national security. The other non-killing faiths calls for loving your neighbours as you love you. So the impression of killing to derive something is seen as immorality in these signifiers of faiths. In comparing to Christianity, Islam does non offer a chapter about love, 1 Corinthians 13.There exist no fable of Good Samaritan ( Docker, 2008 ) . The call to personal sanctity doesn A ; apos ; Ts exist wholly. There is no hope for personal redemption by manner of impeccant forfeit merely as Jesus did upon Calvary. The hope of ageless cloud nine in holy Eden is non-existent ( Ellens, 2004 ) . The forfeit of puting down the life of one individual is non present in Islam. Alternatively, it is killing others that will allow you derive infinity ( Docker, 2008 ) . The love for a neighbour is absent in entirety among the killing faiths. This is seen amongst the Boko Haram activists. This people kill, with the statement that they are recommending for the acceptance of Islamic rules. Prophet Mohammed was a political leader, and the Koran had much to state about how to form a well-run society in a mode that promotes peace and justness. The two make it true by stating that, modern twenty-four hours Muslims find it really absurd to divide faith from Government. It begs the inquiry, why would human jurisprudence be above the jurisprudence of God. It is on this baseline that we find so many extremists lifting up to counter authorities forces in all mode of wicked bloodshed schemes ( Docker, 2008 ) . They do non believe about who they might be seting in danger, but their chief focal point is selfishness. In other universe faiths, the contrary is really apparent, Killing is non allowed and is regarded really evil. Such Acts of the Apostless attract penalties runing from ageless disapprobation and anguish. In these faiths, there is the separation of faith and authorities constructions ( Docker, 2008 ) . The holy book of Muslims is the Koran. It is a digest of God A ; apos ; s Torahs which were revealed to Mohammed.. Mohammed is respected by most Muslims as a prophesier of God and non as an extension of God. Jesus in His plants here on Earth claimed to be God. Mohammed was a mortal appointed by God to proclaim the message of peace and enlightenment and in this sense ; he had no supernatural powers ( Ellens, 2004 ) . To Christianity, it is contrary to these. Jesus in his ministry among the Jews did many miracles that culminated into really many people following His philosophy. This includes raising the dead, mending the ill, etc. For Him, many people believed in ageless cloud nine in holy Eden because He was an extension of God Himself. Modern Day Terrorism Modern twenty-four hours terrorist act is profoundly associated with killing faiths. Take for illustration, Islam. Most terrorist act groups that emerge, usually associate themselves with Islam. An illustration is Al-Qaeda, whose leaders called for Jihad, against the Americans and the Israeli involvements ( Ellens, 2004 ) . This is because they believed that America and Israel were working against the involvements of Islam. The Quran encourages Muslims to take prisoners during cases of war ( Armstrong, 2014 ) . This can merely go on when a jehad is declared. This is the ground why most panic groups usually cite a Jihad, when engaged in terrorist act activities. It might be true theoretically, but modern twenty-four hours terrorist act is apparent on the poetries from Koran like the one above. A batch of accents are on the jehad as agencies of seeing the fantastic life in front of us. In this respect, extremists like the al-Qaeda, al-Shabab and the Boko Haram of Nigeria take it upon themselves to command authoritiess by either commandeering planes, kids or merely killing utilizing bombs ( Armstrong, 2014 ) . What matters to them is exercising fright and anxiousness among guiltless citizens at the disbursal of their selfish enterprises. There is a really strong association between modern twenty-four hours terrorist act and religion. These words are good depicted in the barbarous violent death of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo by a recent Muslim convert called Michael Zeharf-Bibeau. In his entry, he states that it really absurd for a Muslim convert to travel on a shooting fling in the Canadian parliament ( Docker, 2008 ) . In every bit much as it is seeable that the faith has something to make with behaviour, other factors besides can lend. For case, disregard on upbringing, political orientation, mental jobs and even condemnable yesteryear and drug dependence. But of the declared grounds faith has the strongest relation with what Bibeau did in Canada ( Docker, 2008 ) . The precipitation of modern twenty-four hours terrorist act revival of armed and extremist jihadi motions are two in nature.First is the radical ideals and political orientation of the 1979 Persian revolution and secondly, the practical application of jehad against the Soviet Union A ; apos ; s business of Afghanistan. Decision Religious terrorist act is the political insurgence by members of a certain group of doctrinal religion in seeking to debar the effects of the stated political system. In this sense, anything that consequences from such an agreement is viewed as a immense approval to the people contending for that class. Modern twenty-four hours terrorist act is seeable by many groups of the Islamic religion who have a baseline of bloodletting. The recent events in the United States on September 11, 2001 showed the lengths at which these extremists can widen to. The modern twenty-four hours authorities or political units should endeavour to make out to the grudges aired out by political extremists. On a spiritual graduated table, it is imperative for the provinces to seek out to counter the effects of spiritual extremist. The killing faith propagates for modern twenty-four hours highjacking of planes and kids, like the Nigerian Boko Haram and the al-Qaeda non burying the al-Shabaab in contemporary So malia. In this entry it is practical cognition to denote killing faiths with modern terrorist act. Mentions: Armstrong, K. ( 2014 ) .William claude dukenfields of blood faith and the history of force. The Odyssey Themes and Literary Devices

The Odyssey Themes and Literary Devices The Odyssey, Homers epic poem about the decades-long journey of Trojan War hero Odysseus, includes themes such as cunning vs. strength, coming of age, and order vs. disorder. These themes are conveyed with the use of a few key literary devices, including poems-within-a-poem and flashback narration. Cunning vs. Strength Unlike Achilles, the Iliad protagonist known for his physical strength and prowess in combat, Odysseus earns his victories through trickery and cunning. Odysseus’ cleverness is reinforced throughout the text by the use of epithets accompanying his name. These epithets and their translations include: Polymetis: of many counselsPolymekhanos: many-devicedPolytropos: of many waysPolyphron: many-minded The triumph of cunning over strength is a running theme in Odysseus’ journey. In Book XIV, he escapes the cyclops Polyphemus with his words rather than a traditional duel. In Book XIII, he disguises himself as a beggar in order to probe the faithfulness of the members of his court. When he listens to the bard Demodocus retell the end of the Trojan war and the building of the Trojan horse- his own invention in Book VIII- he weeps â€Å"like a woman,† realizing how dangerous his own cunning is. What’s more, Odysseus’ cunning is almost matched by the intelligence of his wife Penelope, who manages to remain loyal to Odysseus and stave off her suitors in his absence through trickery and cunning. Spiritual Growth and Coming of Age The first four books of The Odyssey, known as Telemacheia, follow Odysseus’ son Telemachus. Odysseus has been absent from Ithaca for two decades, and Telemachus sets out to uncover his father’s whereabouts. Telemachus is on the brink of manhood and has very little authority in his own household, as he is besieged by suitors seeking to marry his mother and rule over Ithaca. However, thanks to Athena, who teaches him how to behave among Greek leaders and takes him to visit Pylos and Sparta, Telemachus gains maturity and knowledge. Ultimately, he is able to serve as an ally to his father when it comes time to slay the suitors, a scene that demonstrates how much Telemachus has matured. Odysseus undergoes spiritual growth of his own, becoming less brash and more thoughtful over the course of his journey. At the start of his journey, Odysseus is brash, overconfident, and taunting, which results in numerous obstacles and delays. By the time he returns home, Odysseus has become more cautious and careful. Order vs. Disorder In The Odyssey, order and chaos are represented by the contrasting settings.   The island of Ithaca is orderly and â€Å"civilized†: inhabitants tend to animals and agriculture, engage in handiwork, and lead orderly lives. By contrast, in the worlds visited by Odysseus during his travels, plants grow freely and the inhabitants eat anything that they find. These worlds are depicted as obstacles to Odysseus journey, threatening prevent him from returning home, Consider the Lotus Eaters, who spend their days languorously eating lotus plants; the lotus plants cause a sleepy apathy that Odysseus and his crew have to escape. Another example is the cyclops Polyphemus. Polyphemus, who reaped the fruits of his island without labor, is depicted as one of Odysseus main antagonists. Poems Within a Poem The Odyssey features two bard-like characters, Phemius and Demodocus, whose roles offer insight into the ancient art of oral poetry and storytelling. Both Phemius and Demodocus tell their court audience stories tied to the heroic cycle. In Book I, Phemius sings of the ‘returns’ of other Trojan War heroes. In Book VIII, Demodocus sings about the disagreements of Odysseus and Achilles during the Trojan War, as well as the love affair of Ares and Aphrodite. The vocabulary used to describe the poetic practice suggests that it is a performative art intended for an audience of listeners and accompanied by a lyre. In addition, both bards took requests from their audience: â€Å"But come now, change thy theme,† Demodocus is asked in Book VIII. Such requests suggest that these poets had a wide repertory of tales to draw from. Flashback Narration The narration of The Odyssey begins with Telemachus’ journey. Then, the narrative moves back in time, as Odysseus recounts his journeys for the length of three entire books. Finally, the narrative moves forward in time to Odysseus return to Ithaca. The most notable flashback in the text is the multi-book tale recounted by Odysseus himself, but other sections feature flashbacks, as well. The poem utilizes flashbacks to describe events of the past in detail, including the end of the Trojan War and the return of other war heroes.

The Emotionally Abused Population Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

The Emotionally Abused Population - Essay Example By seriously addressing and analyzing each of these issues, not only will we be able to see the current state of the emotionally abused population, but as well will be able to better recognize and understand about the solutions that can be sought and hoped for in the future. The aim of this paper is to do this, as well as discuss any and all other key and related issues. This is what will be dissertated in the following. The 'emotionally abused population' is a term which basically refers to just what it sounds like - the percentage of people in the world who would be medically classified as being emotionally abused. Emotional abuse can be caused by many different things and people, and in many different ways, and the worst part of all is that most of the time, people do not even realize that they have been or are being emotionally abused until it is too late. Emotional abuse "refers to a long-term situation in which one person uses his or her power or influence to adversely affect the mental well-being of another. Emotional abuse can appear in a variety of forms, including rejection, degradation, isolation, corruption, exploitation, and invoking terror" (Evans, 1996). There are many different indicators which may be a sign that a person is suffering from emotional abuse, and this includes that of the following: depression, withdrawal, low self-esteem, severe anxiety, fearfulness, failure to be able to establish a mutually acceptable manner in which to manage differences, failure to thrive in infancy, aggression, emotional instability, sleep disturbances, extreme dependence, and inability to trust, for example - there are many more. However, some persons who suffer from emotional abuse actually tend to show no signs at all, and this can be frustrating because it can thus often be basically impossible to notice whether or not someone is suffering from emotional abuse. Only a few studies actually have been able to provide any worthwhile insight into the matter of the prevalence of emotional abuse in North America, let alone the rest of the world, and there are many different reasons for this. The subject of emotional abuse is actually quite hard to research, for several different reasons in particular, including: in comparison to other forms of abuse, its effects have only recently been recognized; there are no consistent definitions and it is quite hard to define; it is difficult to detect, assess, and substantiate; and the majority of emotional abuse cases go unreported, thus resulting in a lacking of substantial evidence and data. However, there is a quite significant amount of statistical data which has been attained over the past few years in regards to emotional abuse, and in one study in particular, it was shown that "77 percent of women reported emotional abuse in combination with physical abuse81 percent of male respondents reported that they had psychologically abused a female partnerandthat
